Great news for dirt bikers riding in the Crested Butte single track! The Crested Butte South General Store now has gas pumps! Rather than having to make it in to Crested Butte or try to make it work getting to Almont, high country riders can swing in to Crested Butte South for fuel. The store keeps regular hours of 7am-9pm on weekdays, 7am-9pm on weekends and their pumps take credit cards, so they may be available outside of those hours, as well (will have to verify). The food there is really good, as well, with sandwiches, pizza and more to breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. Need a beer? They have you covered with a small bar, as well.
As Crested Butte South continues to grow in population, dirt bike riders going in and out of the subdivision have been more heavily scrutinized. While the majority of riders play it cool, and keep it mellow and quiet when entering and exiting the subdivision (usually enjoying riding from their front doors), a few bad apples have brought down the law with excessively loud bikes and/or reportedly riding at speeds over the limit. Granted, there are some "Anti" folks CB South who will report their neighbor with street-legal bike and quiet pipe to the cops because they're intolerant whiners, but regardless, the days of comfortably traveling through the subdivision, or even on Cement Creek road (where it's still a Gunnison county road) are over. Your bike must be street legal or you can be pulled over by the police and/or sheriff and cited. They'll probably get you for not having a valid driver's license if they can, as well. CB South recently passed the most restrictive noise ordinance in the valley, so keeping the sound down, regardless of what you ride or drive in CB South, isn't a bad idea, either.
There are a significant number of motorcycle/dirt bike riders in Crested Butte South. The vast majority of you do right when you ride. The longer you look the other way and let the guys and gals who ignore good judgment and local laws make us all look bad, the more we stand to lose. Excessively loud pipes and high speeds through CB South and the residential areas of Cement Creek Road don't cut it any more. If you ride with these people, talk to them and encourage them to back it off when riding through residential areas--it makes a huge difference for your sport. Also, if you know of an item relating to dirt bikes is on the agenda with CB South or County, tell your riding buddies, show up at the meeting and make sure what's being said there is accurate before decisions are made by community leaders. If we don't take responsibility and/or action regarding what's going on with the riding in our back yard, someone else, as shown by CB South cracking down on bikes that aren't street legal, certainly will.
