When we started the Crested Butte Trail Riders Association, we had no idea the group would become this important for the riders of the Gunnison Basin and beyond. We were just a few guys and gals who wanted to make sure that there was always plentiful access to public lands and the trails on those lands in the Crested Butte area. Reminding people to ride in a courteous, low-impact manner, take care of trail maintenance issues where possible and have fun riding covered what we were trying to do. Now we see many important issues that affect the entire Gunnison Basin, as well as neighboring areas.
Over the years, the issues that matter to the CBTRA have grown to include (among other areas) Gunnison, Lake City, Taylor Park, in addition to the Roaring Fork Valley. There's great riding in all of these areas and we all tend to visit each others' "back yards" to enjoy the riding, so it makes sense that we get active and start paying attention to what's going there, as well. Buddy Ramstetter, the new CBTRA president is a Gunnison resident who sees this all too clearly. Regardless of where you live, you tend to ride in many different parts of the Gunnison Basin and beyond.
With this in mind, we hope that those outside of the immediate Crested Butte area will continue to join the CBTRA and continue to be active in the politics and trail maintenance necessary to keep the excellent Gunnison Basin riding opportunities available to us. We would even like to rename the CBTRA to reflect its broader scope . . . if you have ideas for a good-sounding name that describes the areas we cover, please, contact us and let us know. Thanks!
