Overview--Preliminary Travel Management Meeting with FS & BLM

Wednesday, June 21st, found Gunnison Basin Forest Service and BLM staff sitting down with motorized users to outline the process of the upcoming travel management process to be getting underway in July. In case you aren't familliar with travel management for the Gunnison National Forest, this is the process that will determine which Crested Butte single track, 4x4 roads and other routes are open on the Gunnison in the coming years. Rather than this being a forum for motorized users of the Gunnison to defend motorized routes, the meeting allowed the Forest Service and BLM to outline the steps that travel management would take.

Key Concepts

There were some key concepts or "ground rules" passed along to meeting attendees for the travel management process . . . they were as follows:

Travel Management will supersede Forest Planning for the Gunnison. While both are important, travel management will be the ball to keep your eye on.

When the travel management process is complete, "closed unless signed open" will be the rule on trails in the Gunnison. If you don't see a sign designating your type of use on a trail you're about venture down, the trail is closed to you.

The travel management process is focusing on spring, summer and fall motorized and mechanized use on the Gunnison. Winter travel management will fall under another process.

"Green to Yellow" is the existing situation on the forest. Off-trail or road travel, with a few exceptions, is prohibited.

Keep in mind that the Gunnison BLM is going through travel management at the same time, through this same process. Don't forget about your BLM routes when considering your trail use. Hartman Rocks, however, has been addressed in a separate process and will not be covered here.
